Newport hosts an annual marathon that is well attended by runners throughout the area. It is well known for being a great 1st marathon because it has gentle hills, the climate is usually cool and predictable, and the scenery is beautiful. The starting line is at the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse and then the course loops around historic neighborhoods like Nye Beach, then under the bridge and along the bay front and out the bay road. For a complete overview of the route, this years winners, and race information check out the Newport Marathon website.
Although I am not a marathon runner, I love to watch the runners and cheer them on! There is just something exciting about seeing the runners line up and get ready for the race. If you are thinking about running, walking a marathon or ahalf marathon, this is an excellent and well-organized event to attend and participate in the coastal activities.
